Some jobs start with choosing a new carpet. This one started with taking the whole floor out.
The room had an existing floating floor that had failed and sunk in places, leaving a surface that no amount of new underlay or carpet could have put right. Laying a lovely new carpet over a floor like that would only have hidden the problem for a while, so the only proper fix was a full subfloor rip out and a fresh start.
Building a solid base
Once the old floor was out, we supplied and fitted new 25 x 38mm battens, each one drilled and plugged to fix it firmly in place. Between the battens we fitted 25mm Kingspan insulation, which helps keep the room warmer and makes a real difference to how the floor feels underfoot.
On top of that went 22mm Egger moisture resistant boards, glued and screwed down to give a strong, stable floor that won’t move or sink the way the old one did. It’s the part of the job nobody sees once the carpet is down, but it’s what everything else relies on.
The finishing touches
With a sound subfloor in place, the room was ready for the fun part. We laid Tredaire’s 11mm Citra underlay, one of our go to choices for comfort and support, then finished the room with an 80oz carpet from the Victoria Carpets Ultimate Expressions range. A heavier weight carpet like this gives a wonderfully deep, soft feel, and on a properly prepared floor it will look and feel its best for years to come.
